The gift of play might seem unusual, but as Fred Rogers once said, “for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
This holiday season, CIVIC team members joined together to package the gift of play in the most beautiful way — by building life-size playhouses for local children of an orphanage and veterans’ families. Over 60 members of the #CIVICCARES team worked together with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles to paint and construct three playhouses — each one personalized with the recipient’s favorite colors and/or cartoon characters. The daylong event culminated with the presentation of one of the completed playhouses to one of the veteran’s family and children. Being able to see the joy in the children’s eyes and their excitement as they secluded into their own private space was heartwarming and rewarding beyond.
The CIVIC Cares initiative’s partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) is aptly aligned with CIVIC’s core values of Being a Great Partner and Creating Smiles. Habitat LA is excited to offer the Playhouse Build Program, a unique opportunity that provides children with a space to call their own. This program helps to further support Habitat LA in its larger mission of making difference for low-income families in need of decent, sustainable and affordable housing in greater Los Angeles.
